Granddad

My granddad has passed away in the evening of 31st august 2007. what he left behind in me, was his fond memories, the pride of a uniform, and his smiles.

he moved to my hse to stay wif us since i was primary five. it was then which i had my first breakfast wif my granddad. i still remember fondly, he ordered a carrot cake for me, a teh-o and then ordered a kopi-o-gao for himself. it was joyous occasion.

he then moved into my room while i slept wif my parents. he would leave home in the morning for his city tour and return home at night. have dinner wif us. and share his war time stories.

he was an officer in the straits settlement police force. when the japanese invaded singapore, most of the police officers changed into sarongs and fled the station, but he foolishly yet wif courage don the Police uniform while he was caught by the japanese.

he was then sent to thailand for the construction of the death railway. many din survived the mission. he was a mircle. one day the chef was sick, and the japanese requested for a cover, he volunteered, not only did his cooking pleased the soliders but too the commander.

he was then sent back to singapore to cook for the japanese.

when the japanese surrender. the japanese soliders lowered their flag, and raised the british flag, saluted the flag. and released all the prisoners. which they can choose not to do. but wif the immense nationalism they have in them, after releasing the soliders, they took their sword, and took sucide.

When singapore merged wif malaysia. My granddad then was a police officer in the Malaysian Police Force. Upon seperation and the formation of the Republic of Singapore. He was then an officer of the Singapore Police Force.

He was a coporal at that point of time. in charge of boat quay, clark quay and lau pa sat. stomping his dominance in the market, as a police officer.

He then retired in 1967 as a coporal.

He respect and honour as a police officer has flown into my dad blood, my and my brothers blood

he had a heart attack 1 year ago. and was living in a nursing home since then.

When i saw him on the 25th of august.when he was admitted for Tubercolosis,My family and I wore the mask and went to see him in the Isolation ward. i could see him with the oxygen mask, showing the thumbs up to me and my brother. showing me two fingers which represent two stripes the Rank of a Coporal. and showing my brother three fingers which represents three stripes the Rank of a Sergeant.

He said.

Im proud, my son is a Police Officer. My grandsons are also police officers. he shown us the thumbs up and u could see the pride the honour the happiness in him.

He was thirsty at that time, asking for fruit juices and white chicken wing. my brother went to buy the chicken wing while i went to buy the fruit juices. two peel fresh orange and two fruit tree apple juice.

when my aunt removed the juices 1 by 1 from the bag, you could see the exclaimation and the joy in him. he went Wa, Waa, WAAA, WAAAA upon seeing 1 by 1 the bottles came out. i could not feel more then happy when i saw that expression.

after sunday, he begun to feel tired. he started to feel sleepy.

i went to see him on wednesday. i could see him having difficulty breathing and clutching his chest in pain while asleep. it pains my heart. how could a person so healthy 1 year ago, succumb to such a pain. my tears tickle down the face. i decided to leave the room in order to control my feelings.

He left behind 10 sons/daughters and 15grandsons/daughters on the night of 31st august. he went peacefully.

it was a relief in my point of view. he was certainly better den wednesday. hes no longer in pain. i believe he is in a place better.

he was cremated on tuesday. and his ashes is in CCK now.

Since his departure, the donning of the SPF Uniform is never the same anymore.

Im going to find minitures

1. Police badge to place infront of his ashes slot
2. Axe brand medicated oil, as he requested it everyday in the hospital
3. 2 miniture Ang Ji Gao cans

More to come.

Take care granddad. For you left behind honour and passion and in my blood
